To The Editors:

“A conservative is a fellow who is standing athwart history yelling, ‘Stop’!”

So said William F. Buckley, observing history’s tendencies towards greater governmental power. Our own country is not immune and we would be foolish not to heed the warning. We have moved from the New Deal to the Great Society to sole discretion by the Treasury Secretary to nationalize private enterprise. Of course, claiming that the government has been taken over by “closet communists” is loony. However, it is not loony to say that the present Administration is populated by those who utilize collectivist principles and policies. If these principles and policies worked, then the Great Society Programs would have eradicated poverty and provided quality health care for all. They haven’t and they won’t.

Sound principles that have made this country great is what last Saturday’s Tea P arty was all about. And, many of the chants reflected the desire for smaller government and fiscal responsibility, not the communist takeover that one individual out of 300 spoke about. On the other hand, President Obama’s proposed policies do not reflect sound principles. The bond market has recently sounded alarms and even Western European countries are warning that we are headed down the road to greater collectivism and fiscal irresponsibility.

So where are these angels in government that will save us from the evil doers of big business. Are they the same individuals overseeing Fannie Mae? Are they the same individuals that are cynically leveraging an economic crisis to promote a political agenda of greater government control?  Or are they the same individuals who feign outrage and turn that rage against innocent citizens?

Reducing taxes for the middle class, and eliminating the tax on dividends and capital gains is sound policy that puts power into the hands of the people, not government.
